This newly developed agar enables the identification of yeasts as either
Candida albicans; C. kefyr or C. tropicalis; or other species.
The agar is based upon a Sabouraud Dextrose formulation containing the
PPR glucosaminide substrate. All strains of Candida albicans grown on
this agar have produced deep pink/red spotted colonies within 24-48 hours
of incubation at 37°C. Colonies of C. kefyr and C. tropicalis produced
uniformly pink colonies with all other species producing white colonies.
In an evaluation study, using 125 strains of Candida spp., the sensitivity
of CDA was 100%. CDA was superior to other commercially available chromogenic
Candida agars (Candida ID, bioMerieux and Chromagar Candida, Chromagar
Ltd., Rambach). A further important advantage of CDA agar is that the
coloration of yeast colonies is distinct; either pink/red spotted,
uniformly pink or white.
